University offers social media degree

about Facebook, Twitter and Bebo

30 march 2009

A university is to offer a master's degree teaching students about social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Bebo.

The £4,400 MA in Social Media will also explain how to set up blogs and publish podcasts.

The one-year course at Birmingham City University will consider social networking sites as communications and marketing tools.

The course, which will start next year, was advertised through a makeshift video on the university's website.

Jon Hickman, the course convener, said he had received a good response from potential students and described what the course would entail.

He said: "It's not for freaks or IT geeks, the tools learnt on this course will be accessible to many people.

"During the course we will consider what people can do on Facebook and Twitter, and how they can be used for communication and marketing purposes.

"There has been significant interest in the course already, and it will definitely appeal to students looking to go into professions including journalism and PR."

Mr Hickman described how the course had to conform to academic standards before it was approved by education committees as a worthy course to undertake.

"In my opinion, the course does entail synoptic research and scholarly activity, which are the fundamental criteria for Masters degrees," he said.

"It's very relevant and very scholarly. It's a new course, but its importance is unquestionable.

"Social media is very important for jobs within the marketing and communications sector, as a skill set within other jobs, and as an industry within itself."

Despite claims of its instant popularity, students have attacked the course for being too simple.

Birmingham-based student Jamie Waterman, 20, said: "Virtually all of the content of this course is so basic it can be self taught.

"In fact most people know all this stuff already. I think it's a complete waste of university resources."

Interactive Tool: What Is Your Stress Level?

By Jeannette Curtis

What does this tool measure?

Interactive health icon

Click here to find out your stress level.

Although everyone responds differently, major life changes are some of the biggest causes of stress, both positive and negative. This interactive tool gauges your stress level based on the number of life changes you have had recently. Your score shows a rough estimate of your current stress level and the likelihood that you will have health problems due to stress in the next 12 to 18 months.

Short-term (acute) stress can keep you awake at night and make you feel irritable and edgy. High stress levels over a long period of time (chronic stress) can cause serious health problems such as high blood pressure, and it can weaken your immune system and make it difficult for your body to fight disease. Stress is linked to health conditions such as depression, heart disease, and asthma.1

My stress level result is

You have high stress.
Take action now to reduce and manage your stress. Stabilize the amount of changes in your life and avoid unnecessary stress. Evaluate how you communicate, manage your commitments, and prioritize your time. Make stress-reducing lifestyle choices a priority: seek therapy or exercise.

Stress is Sabotaging Your Diet Success

By Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief

If there's one thing that gets in the way of you being your healthiest, it's stress.
For anyone who's found themselves standing in front of the freezer inhaling spoonfuls of Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream (not my real name!) to avoid finishing a project, or waking up three times in the wee hours of the night in anticipation of a difficult conversation, here's some not-so-shocking news: Research shows that anxiety can make you sleep fewer hours, get sick more often, remember less, become more prone to long-term disease and—as if you needed reminding—eat more. No wonder up to 90 percent of doctor visits are for stress-related complaints, a fact that I suspect too many of you know firsthand (though you experience it as GI distress, back pain, a headache or other physical symptom).

In a recent Self.com poll, 85 percent of women said that worries interfere with their ability to catch zzz's, while 71 percent say they're more irritable due to stress. And given the recent headlines about the state of our economy, it's not surprising that 52 percent of women say they are under considerably more stress than they were six months ago. (What is your stress level?)

Grim, yes, but there IS hope. Just as our bodies are wired to react to stress, we're all also programmed to know how to wind down, whether it's by watching a funny movie, sitting in the sauna, sipping some chamomile tea (while dunking a cookie, of course!) or drinking a glass (or two) of wine with dinner. These activities switch on the brain's pleasure centers, blocking the production of the stress hormone cortisol and churning out happiness-inducing chemicals like serotonin instead.

When I feel a tightening in my back or neck coming on, I cope by doing things I love, like going for a long, slow run in the park with my dog. Try a few of these instant soothers, and watch your own stress go from ARGH! to Ahhh.

Turn up the tunes. Listening to music that has a steady (not frenetic) beat may cause brain waves to keep time and relax you, research from a music symposium at Stanford University in California reports. Load your iPod with a playlist of the songs that make you happiest.

Phone a friend. Pouring your heart out to pals can help you cope with bad feelings and brainstorm new ways to solve problems. And don't forget to return the favor: Lending an ear and offering support can make you feel needed and reduce anxiety. (Or drop them an e-card to say thanks!)

Break a sweat. Exercising for 30 minutes makes your body release chemicals that dull the physiological effects of stress response for up to a full day. But the effect only works when the activity is something you really want to do, so make sure you're psyched about channeling your energy in that cardiovascular direction.

Use a better bulb. Outfit your office lamp with an incandescent bulb, particularly if your cubicle is brightened by fluorescent lights. Incandescent and fluorescent lights work together to more closely mimic outside light. And it's sunshine (or the perception of it) that regulates the body's biorhythms. Not getting enough of it can affect hormone levels, suppressing the immune system and increasing the probability of mood swings, depression and sluggishness.

Pamper yourself. Whether you get a pedicure or splurge on a blowout, giving yourself special treatment reduces your blood pressure and gets your mind off what’s bothering you. Science supports this coping mechanism as well: A warm bath can activate neurons that increase serotonin, and a study from Bowling Green State University in Ohio found that a 15-minute massage can significantly cut anxiety levels. Not up for a splurge? Get the same effect from an at-home pedicure, manicure or blowout.

Dine by candlelight. The effect won't just make you look gorgeous. The dim setting actually signals your brain to release melatonin, the good-for-you sleep hormone which ensures a better night's rest. And catching enough zzz's helps keep your stress levels under control and your immune system humming. Can't sleep? See what your stress dreams are trying to tell you.

Snuggle with your sweetie. A simple 20-second kiss or hug increases endorphin levels,

Keep a journal. Jotting down your stressful thoughts can help you look at them more logically, potentially easing anxiety, mentally and physically. A study in the Journal of Health Psychology finds that a mere month of expressive writing can help reduce hypertension. Keep a pretty notebook handy at all times.

Anticipate something awesome. Or something tiny that makes you smile. The point is to look forward to something each day, whether it’s enjoying your morning java or counting down to an exotic vacation. Practicing this will keep your mind from focusing on what could go wrong that day.

Exhibit your exhilarating moments. Tape up pictures of three amazing days you’ve experienced, such as dancing at your wedding or crossing the finish line of a half-marathon. Honing in on the images for at least 10 seconds can lower muscle tension and stabilize your heartbeat.

Give someone props. Go on, pay a compliment to someone deserving. Research has shown that the more warm personal connections you make, the better your body is at jettisoning the effects of stress.

Lights Off Brunei!
By M Anwar

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei will be "switching off' this Saturday night in support of the Earth Hour 2009 campaign. The Department of Electrical Services is calling on the public to take the opportunity to be part of this global campaign.

Initiated by the World Wide Life Fund for Nature (WWF), this collective participation from people all over the world to save energy for one hour will start from 8.30pm local time tomorrow. In a press statement yesterday, the Department of Electrical Services said that Brunei's energy sources are non-renewable and are highly carbon-based. Towards ensuring that the future generation's needs are not compromised, it is crucial that smart steps are taken to conserve energy.

Energy saving and conservation were implemented
in Brunei nationwide last year through the eSaving (electricity-saving) programme. This year, it will again be implemented in conjunction with the country's Energy Day on May 24.

Both HSBC and Sheraton Hotel have already joined the Earth Hour bandwagon in doing their part to increase awareness on climate change.

Sheraton Hotel has already launched their energy saving week and associates of the hotel have been invited to sign a commitment to pledge in assisting the hotel in achieving its target of five per cent reduction in energy consumption this year.

They have also called Noor Dina Zharina Yahya, Special Duties Officer from the Energy Division, to provide tips on saving energy and its importance. Throughout the week, the hotel will also be organising various activities for its associates to create more awareness on climate change and will also have a mini-exhibition at the hotel lobby.

This Saturday, the hotel during the Earth Hour will turn off exterior lighting, dim or turn off non-essential interior lighting and use candlelight in appropriate public areas.

They are also inviting the public to have candlelight dinner with loved ones at the Tasek Brasserie, Deals Restaurant and Pizza Connection in support of this worldwide event.

The United Nations (UN), meanwhile, will also be observing Earth Hour this Saturday as part of its efforts to mobilise global support for a new agreement on climate change expected to be put forward in December in Copenhagen.

Earth Hour was launched two years ago and this year's combined efforts bring in more than 1,000 cities with close to one billion people taking part.

Many cities have come up with different ways to celebrate the global event. Some television networks during Earth Hour will also be off the air.

So far Amman, Bangkok, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Manila, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rome, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Suva and Warsaw have committed themselves to the cause.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called Earth Hour as a way for the citizens of the world to send a clear message that they want action on climate change.

The DES said that energy saving efforts should be made on an ongoing basis and should not be done so exclusively in a short-term campaign. Locals interested in the Department's energy saving drive can get more information at www.energy.gov.bn. --

Bandar Seri Begawan - Jerudong Park Playground launched a new flotilla of pedal boats in the Carousel Lake. Playground visitors now have the option of two models of pedal boats; the contemporary two-seater or the zippy new water scooters dubbed 'Formula 1 on the Pond'.

The launching of the pedal boats coincides with the completion of a three-month renovation programme which included the rebuilding of the pedal boat dock, cleaning of the lake, reinstating of the lake's fountain and lighting features and repainting of gazebos acid other structures in Phase IA.

Russell Finney, General Manager of JPCC, which includes Jerudong Park Playground, said, "The new pedal boats are a huge improvement.

Brunei Denies Limbang Story
By Azlan Othman

Pehin Dato Awg Lim Jock Seng

Bandar Seri Begawan - YB Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Awg Lim Jock Seng, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, yesterday said claims on Limbang were never discussed during Monday's deliberations between Brunei and Malaysia.

He was responding to YB Dato Paduka Hj Puasa bin Orang Kaya Seri Pahlawan Tudin's query on the contents of the "Letter of Exchange" signed between Brunei and Malaysia, which also touched on Brunei's claims over Limbang at the Legislative Council meeting yesterday.

Pehin Lim said there were certain press reports yesterday claiming that Brunei has dropped claims over Limbang.

"In actual fact, the claim on Limbang was never discussed. What was discussed was the demarcation of land boundaries on the whole," he said.

"The joint press statement issued yesterday mentioned that the demarcation of the land boundaries between the two countries will be resolved on the basis of five existing historical agreements between the Government of Brunei and the State of Sarawak, and, as appropriate, the watershed principle.

"After that a working group comprising general surveyors of the two countries will follow with the technical aspect to solve the land border issue," Pehin Lim added.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi held a four-eye meeting at the Istana Nurul Iman on Monday and signed the Exchange of Letters to mark the successful conclusion of negotiations.

The negotiations have been ongoing for many years on outstanding bilateral issues between the two countries with regard to historical, legal and other relevant criteria involving both sides.

Both noted the agreement of their respective governments on the key elements contained in the Exchange of Letters, which included the final delimitation of maritime boundaries between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia, the establishment of Commercial Agreement Area (CAA) on oil and gas, the modalities for the final demarcation of the land boundary between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia and unsuspendable rights of maritime access for nationals and residents of Malaysia across Brunei's maritime zones en route to and from their destination in Sarawak, Malaysia provided that Brunei's laws and regulations are observed.

Meanwhile, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Adanan, the Minister of Home Affairs, said an allocation has been made in the budget to upgrade the Kuala Lurah Control Post.

After the border issue between Brunei and Malaysia is resolved, work will be carried out to identify the site.

He was responding to a query by YB Dato Paduka Hj Puasa on the long queues that border hoppers normally experience during school holidays, Hari Raya and other public holidays and the need to upgrade Pandaruan ferry services and Puni Control Post in Temburong.

YB Dato Paduka Hj Puasa added that the opening of a new bridge soon in Trusan, Lawas will further aggravate the situation should these control post projects are not carried out. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
