Domestic Tourism Given Shot In The Arm With ‘Must-Do’ Packages

Bandar Seri Begawan – Brunei’s Tourism Development Department of the Ministry of Industry & Primary Resources (MIPR) yesterday continued its ongoing domestic tourism campaign for this year by hosting a "Kenali Negara Kitani" (KNK) Roadshow at the Amar Pahlawan Hall at the Ministry of Communications' building.
The guest of honour was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Hj Alaihuddin Pehin Orang Kaya DiGadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Hj Awg Mohamad Taha. Also present was the ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary, heads of departments, senior officers, officers and staff.
The KNK road show presentation was part of an ongoing domestic tourism campaign carried out by the Tourism Development Department since 2007.
Yesterday's road show was led by the Director of Tourism Development Department cum Chief Executive Officer of the Brunei Tourism Board, Sheikh Jamatuddin Sheikh Mohamed, accompanied by tourism officers and KNK partners from the private sectors.
According to a press release from the Tourism Development Department, the objective of the campaign was to create greater awareness on domestic tourism attractions and activities.
It was aimed at local residents as well as government civil servants, to educate the public at large as well as relevant tourism stakeholders about the economic benefits of the domestic tourism industry, its employment opportunities and the choice of careers it can offer.
Most importantly, the KNK campaign also aimed to promote the concept of domestic tourism among locals as well as discovering what unexpected treasures Brunei has to offer to its citizens.
According to Sheikh Jamaluddin, there are a number of residents of the country who have not yet been to Temburong. The KNK campaign, he said, was a good way to increase public's awareness to discovering attractive places.
In his welcoming remarks, Sheikh Jamaluddin enlightened the attendee’s on the future developments of the Tourism Development Department.
The Kg Ayer Cultural Centre was mentioned, which according to Sheikh Jamaluddin, is already completed and will be officially opened next month. "It is here where tourists will be educated with the history before going on the Kg Ayer tour."
Other tourism plans include enlivening the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan.
A slowdown in worldwide overseas travel is expected to happen this year due to the economic slowdown and the current global financial instability, said the press release.
The Brunei Tourism Department, in its effort to compensate for the forecasted slowdown in the travel industry, is stepping up its domestic tourism campaign this year with the introduction of a new marketing campaign called "10 must-do KNK Packages for 2009".
The 10 packages are Sunset Brunei Bay Cruise with a two-hour duration and promotion price of B$35-per person (minimum six-pax).
One night stay at Ulu Ulu Resort at the Ulu Temburong National Park at B$290 per. person.
Beach Fun Day with sea sports activities (four hours duration) at B$99 per adult (minimum two-pax).
Proboscis Monkey Tour (one-hour river safari) at B$15 per person (minimum six-pax); Sungai Brunei Night Safari (four-hour river night safari) B$50 per person (minimum six-pax) inclusive of dinner at Kg Ayer Restaurant; Typical Brunei Fishing Village Experience (five hours duration) at B$50 per person (minimum six-pax) inclusive of lunch; Sailing in Brunei, 10 per cent off from the B$60 Sunset Cruise; Ulu Temburong day-trip adventure (eight hours duration) at B$88 per person (minimum two-pax) inclusive of lunch; Ulu Kitani Package (two-day one-night) at B$120 per person (minimum six-pax); and Green Holiday at Subliming Eco Village at B$68 per person (minimum two-pax) inclusive of morning tea and lunch.
Participating KNK partners this year are Ulu National Park Resort Temburong, Mona Flora Fauna Tours, Sunshine Borneo Tours, Dolphin Sea Sports, Hasa Incentives, Singgahrurai Rainforest Lodge, Freme Travel and Dream Charters.
The department has also announced the launching of "KNK Passport" to encourage more locals and expatriates living in the country to participate in this year-long campaign.
Both projects will he launched on February 12 during the Brunei International Trade & Consumer Exhibition (BITC) at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.
More information will be given out during the launch, said the press release.
Sheikh Jamaluddin, on behalf of the Tourism Board, yesterday extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Communications for their cooperation and commitment in improving the transportation services in the country.
He also applauded the efforts made by the Land Transport Department in tackling issues related to public transportation such as bus and taxi services in the country as this, he said, will help in making Brunei a more "tourist-friendly" destination.
The Tourism Director hoped that the introduction of the coach services to and from our Bruneian neighbors, such as Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and Pontianak, Kalimantan, which was launched last year, will improve the accessibility of tourists to the country.
