40 youths join fire prevention course

MORE than 40 youth participants from various institutions completed a Fire Prevention Short-Course at the Youth Centre in the capital yesterday.
The course was held in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Training Institution Department through the Youth, Culture and Sport Department.
Hj Bostamam Hj Lamat, the course organiser, said in his opening speech the objective of the course was to expose the youth to the role of Fire and Rescue Department in handling cases and at the same give them the chance to learn the basic technique in fire fighting.
He further said that this project was part of the department's effort in filling up the holiday season of students with extra curriculum activities that will become beneficial knowledge for them. He went on to say that more youths should grab this opportunity to attend this kind of course in the future.
According to him, the three-day course included a lot of theory lessons, which were not limited only to various outdoor practical activities.
On the first day, participants were trained with building fire prevention involving the use of fire extinguisher, fire drill equipment, taking call on information on fire report and self-rescue technique in a dark building. On the second day of the course, participants were trained with practical activities in fire equipment handling technique, assembling and dismantling of fire hose reels and building evacuation drill.
On the last day, the youths had an opportunity to learn on handling victim/casualty evacuation technique, fire drill assembly and use of different types of fire extinguishers and identifying types of fire.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, course manager Aznain Hj Idris, 43, said that they invited participants to attend the course by advertising it in local newspapers and the sending of memorandum to villages since last october.
Md Fadzry Jabir, 18, from Kampung Sungai Bunga, said that he and his friends gladly took the opportunity to join the course.
The course, he said, was very useful to them as they learned a lot of lessons which they will not be able to learn from books.
According to him, the most exciting part of the course was when they had to enter a dark room full of thick smoke as if it was a real fire situation and they had to overcome their fear.
One of the guests, Asmali Abdullah, 23, from the prison department, said that he was glad to send his brother to attend the course as he did not want to see his brother stay at home for not doing anything during the holiday season.
With this course, he said, his brother will get a lot of extra knowledge and this programme will also teach the participants to be a useful person. (BPA1)

THE fire prevention course, held yesterday to fill up youths' holiday season with various useful and beneficial activities, is aimed at generating youths in the Sultanate to be more knowledgeable and productive in the community.
Speaking to The Brunei Times on the sidelines of the course, Nuur Aqilah Hj Zainal Ariffin, a 19-year-old student from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), said that they feel honoured to be given the opportunity to join the programme as she did not expect it to be so exciting and memorable. Youths, she said, should take an opportunity to fill up their time efficiently, especially during the holiday season.
She said that doing a lot of healthy and positive activities will help the younger generation to avoid any negative and illegal activities.
She said that some students were also taking the opportunity during the school holidays to get part time jobs to earn extra money and learn how to be independent. Working part time, she said, will at least reduce the burden of their parents in providing them with school uniforms, books and stationeries.
She further said that during the course they learned a lot of important lesson in maintaining healthy environment by looking after home facilities properly such as electrical power supply and others. "It is very important to provide homes with sufficient fire prevention equipment in order to minimise the damage while waiting for the Fire and Rescue Department personnel to take their action."
She also said that by attending the course, they will have a better understanding about how Fire and Rescue Department handling a fire every time they receive report.
She added that apart from learning each specification of the fire prevention equipment, participants were also trained with other skills, such as leadership and sense of responsibility. "Being responsible and aware about the aspect of safety will help the others from sustaining injuries."
The UBD student said that with the experience, she would also relate the knowledge by implementing it with her subject of Public Policy in the university. She added that they will be ready to be called up anytime to help the Fire and Rescue Department as volunteers.
She said that she would like to encourage her other friends to participate in any activities to fill up their time with beneficial programme.

Md Fazry Jabir, 18, said that he learned a lot of lessons during the school holiday by mingling with people that he has never met before. During the course, he said, they went through hardship together and learned how to give a strong support and cooperation to each other in order to achieve a successful mission.
He hoped that the department hold advanced courses in the future and he will be happy to attend the programme with his other friends. (BPA1)
